English

Inkscape 1.4.4 is a free SVG vector editor. See Windows, macOS, and Linux setup steps, release highlights, GPL v2 licensing, and startup or extension help.

Who should use Inkscape?

Inkscape is a desktop vector graphics editor for creating and editing SVG illustrations, icons, logos, posters, and diagrams. Designers, educators, and other creators who need scalable artwork can start with the official tutorials and examples. The program is licensed under GPL v2; the license for artwork made with it depends on its creators and any source material used.

Features and practical uses

The official project describes Inkscape as an open-source scalable vector graphics editor. Version 1.4.4 adds a palette and a control for rotating stars and polygons to an upright position, alongside interface and documentation translation updates. It suits editable SVG artwork and diagrams. Check SVG or PDF compatibility with the receiving workflow before preparing print or handoff files. This guide summarizes public documentation; the installer was not downloaded or tested.

Wikimedia Commons lists GNU GPL v2 or later, GFDL 1.2 or later, and CC BY-SA 3.0 Unported. Attribution and license: file page and CC BY-SA 3.0. GTK artwork credit remains separate; no endorsement is implied.

Install Inkscape on Windows

Open the official Inkscape 1.4.4 Windows page and choose x86_64 or ARM64 to match the device.
Download and run the matching official installer, then follow its prompts.
Before updating, uninstall the previous version, as the official page advises. For parallel versions, it recommends extracting a compressed archive into an empty folder.
If the app does not launch, check the architecture and package, then consult the official startup FAQ.

The Windows page states that Inkscape 1.3.x requires Windows 8.1 or later, but it does not specify a minimum requirement for 1.4.4; this guide does not infer one.

Install Inkscape on macOS

Visit the official Inkscape 1.4.4 macOS page and select the Intel or arm64 DMG for the Mac.
Open the downloaded DMG and follow the included installation instructions. Use the official download source rather than an unverified repack.
If startup fails, check that the package architecture matches the Mac and consult the official FAQ. The page reviewed here does not state a minimum macOS version.

Install Inkscape on GNU/Linux

Visit the official Inkscape 1.4.4 GNU/Linux page, which lists AppImage, Flatpak, Snap, and an Ubuntu PPA.
Choose one channel that fits the distribution and follow its installation instructions. Avoid mixing package sources if you are unsure which version will launch.
Start the app from the desktop menu. If you use command-line launch or extensions, review the known issues below and your distribution's GTK/Wayland setup.

The official page reviewed here does not provide one minimum Linux version or hardware requirement for all distributions. Check the selected package format and distribution documentation.

What changed in Inkscape 1.4.4?

The official release page dates Inkscape 1.4.4 to May 6, 2026 and describes it as a maintenance and bug-fix release. It reports about 20 crash fixes, more than 25 bug fixes and performance improvements, a new palette, a star and polygon rotation button, 27 updated interface translations, 15 updated documentation translations, and Windows on Arm installation files. This is a summary, not a replacement for the official release notes.

FAQ and known issues

Why do extensions fail on macOS?

The official known-issues section says extensions may not work when Inkscape for macOS is started from the command line, including extensions in the GUI and command-line extension calls. The issue relates to a security feature added for official macOS DMGs in version 1.4.3. Try opening the app normally from Finder; for command-line workflows, consult the official release notes and issue links.

Can Wayland cause a dock or dialog crash?

The release notes report that, with some GTK versions on Wayland, moving a docked tab or closing a floating dialog may crash, and undocking can select the wrong dialog. Save work, avoid the affected interaction, and check the GTK version, desktop session, and upstream GTK issue. The report does not mean every Linux desktop is affected.

What should I check if Inkscape will not start after an update?

Confirm that the downloaded architecture matches the device and uninstall the previous version before updating, as the Windows instructions advise. Windows users can also consult the official startup FAQ. If using a compressed archive, extract it to a separate empty folder.

Will an SVG look identical in every application?

Not necessarily. Font availability, filters, extensions, and application support can affect how SVG content appears elsewhere. Keep the editable source file and check the recipient's workflow; export PDF when that better fits the delivery requirements.
